How We Rank

Tacos Near You ranks a place by three things it can verify, how taco-focused it is, whether its listing checks out against public data, and how complete its details are. There are no star ratings in our data source and nobody pays for placement.

The score

Every venue on a ranked list gets a score out of ~100, built from:

• Taco specialisation (up to 40). A taqueria, birrieria or taco truck is here to make tacos, so it scores highest. A taco shop scores below that, a taco bar below that, and a general Mexican restaurant lowest, it may do great tacos, but tacos are not its whole reason to exist.
• Listing verified (30). Awarded when the venue is confirmed against a public dataset (currently OpenStreetMap; city health-inspection data as it is added).
• Detail on record (up to 30). Points for recorded opening hours, a phone number and a website, a complete listing is a more useful one.

Ties break alphabetically. A venue with a thin listing is not hidden; it just sits lower.

What we do not do

• We do not invent ratings, reviews, prices or menus.
• “Hours not recorded” means unknown, never “closed”.
• We do not sell placement, and there is no advertising in the listings.

When this improves

The current venue data is from OpenStreetMap, which has no ratings and partial hours. When a licensed source (Google Places, Outscraper) is imported, ratings and review counts join the score and the specialisation weighting drops accordingly. The method on this page is updated whenever the scoring changes.
