How Many Tacos Per Person? A Planning Cheat Sheet

Plan on about three street-size tacos per adult as a main meal, or two if there are heavy sides and dessert. That works out to roughly four ounces of cooked meat per person, or five to six ounces of raw meat before it shrinks. Kids eat about half an adult portion. For a taco bar where people build their own, add ten to fifteen percent because people over-serve themselves.

Two rules that save you

Round up on meat, round down on nothing. Running out of the main protein is the one failure guests remember. Leftover cooked meat freezes well.

Offer two proteins, not five. A crowd-pleaser like chicken or ground beef plus one better option like carne asada or al pastor covers almost everyone, keeps prep sane, and cuts waste.

FAQ

How much does taco catering cost per person?

Roughly $10 to $15 for drop-off, $18 to $30 for a staffed taco bar, and $20 to $35 for an on-site taco truck, before tax, tip and travel. See our catering page for the full breakdown.

What if it is a late-night or bar event?

People eat more tacos and fewer sides. Bump to 3 to 4 tacos per person and keep the sides minimal.

Corn or flour for a big group?

Corn is safer: it is gluten-free by default, cheaper in bulk, and holds saucy fillings. Have a small stack of flour for anyone who asks.
