Best Tacos in Somerville: 17 Independent Spots

Anna's Taqueria, Los Amigos Taqueria, Taqueria el Barrio lead our Somerville ranking, which weighs taco specialisation and listing completeness rather than star ratings.

17 are on record in our directory for Somerville, MA. That is a floor, not a census.

No — 100% of the 17 Somerville spots on record are independents rather than chain locations, and 7 of them are taquerias rather than general Mexican restaurants.

2 Somerville spots are tagged vegetarian-friendly, but most taquerias will build one from beans, nopales, rajas, potato or mushrooms whether or not it is on the menu — it is usually a question of asking rather than finding a dedicated place.

Where we have Google ratings for a city, the list is ordered by rating weighted by how many reviews it has, so one five-star review cannot top a proven favourite. Where ratings are still missing, we fall back to how taco-focused a place is (a taqueria or truck above a general Mexican restaurant), whether its listing is verified against public records, and how complete its details are. Nobody pays for placement.

It covers the same ground, real local spots, but structured: a ranked list with addresses, hours and directions, refreshed with each data import rather than frozen at whenever a thread was posted. Reddit is still good for the argument; this is for the shortlist.

Usually it means the city is expensive to operate in, so rents push out the small, cheap, owner-run taquerias that make the best tacos, and what is left skews upscale or Tex-Mex. The good spots still exist, they are just spread out. Our city pages point you to them.
